It's a mattress fit for a king! Ok, not necessarily. But king size mattresses earn you luxury points no matter where you are or what they're made of, and for me, my favorite things in the world are my Temperpedic king size mattresses. Upstairs and downstairs, two is better than one when it comes to everything.
Of course, not everyone needs king size mattresses. Me, I have a girlfriend who thrashes about in her sleep, rolling over and stealing blankets constantly, so king size mattresses are a must. But if you sleep soundly, and your significant other sleeps soundly, then there's no need for something quite so large.

The sizes in the UK and Ireland, other than the double, vary compared to the U.S. sizes, being generally smaller. The U.S. queen corresponds to UK king and king to super king. The European or continental basic sizes are similar to the UK but have a set length of 2 metres. The terms queen, king and super king are not used in continental Europe, and double refers to 140 cm or any higher width. Instead of these US/UK denominations, the bed width is given in centimetres.
These dimensions are for the mattress—the actual bed frame will be a little bigger in order to fully encompass and support the mattress. The thickness of the mattress may vary considerably.
In the UK, IKEA only sells beds in European sizes and are sometimes known as 'IKEA size beds', especially given that there are very few places which sell European beds in the UK, and so owners of IKEA beds generally have to go to IKEA to buy correct sized mattresses too.
At room temperature, memory foam is harder than at skin/body temperature, which causes it to soften on contact and mold itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes.

No wonder my feet hung over the edge when I was in England. They don't make their king size mattresses king size!
According to bettersleep.org, king size mattresses are usually the best for most families:
King size is the best choice for couples that want maximum personal sleeping space. It's also the best bet to accommodate that time on Sunday morning when children may pop into bed – or if the pets in your house have mattress privileges! However, size can be a problem. Even with a "split box spring" – two twin-size foundations to support it – to make a king set more manageable, it may be too big for some bedrooms or too bulky to navigate through some corridors, doors and stairwells. It's a good idea to break out the tape measure if there is any doubt.
